SC 01-Improving Scientific Advice for the Conservation and Management of Oceanic Sharks and Rays

Purpose of the specific contract

The purpose of this specific study is to provide the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) with:

  • updated information regarding the association or occurrence of pelagic sharks and rays in different fisheries,
  • updated information regarding data collection and methodological approaches for the assessment of conservation status of sharks,
  • a critical review of existing Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs) for sharks and of the current conservation status of the species concerned,
  • proposals to improve and/or provide alternative options for conservation and management of sharks taking into account any recent methodological advances and new data or information.

The starting point for the development of this study will be the first EUPOA sharks study

Scope of the study

The geographical scope of the study is the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. The study shall cover in particular, the main pelagic sharks caught by pelagic fisheries including under Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (longime and purse seine fishery, as well as other major fisheries depending on the areas).

In particular, the study should focus on the pelagic longime and purse seine fisheries and on blue shark (Prionace glauca), shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus), longiin mako (Isurus paucus), porbeagle (Lamna nasus), silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus), hammerheads (Sphyrna spp.) and thresher sharks (Alopias spp.).
