SC 08-Scientific approaches for the assessment and management of deep sea fisheries and ecosystems in RFMOS and RFBS

Purpose of this study

The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview and analysis on deep-sea fishing scientific approaches in support of RFMOs management measures in order to achieve effective and coherent governance of deep-sea species and ecosystems in high seas waters.

In other words, obtaining a coherent science based deep-sea fisheries management approach in the high seas to achieve higher long-term fishery resources sustainability.

Scope of the study

This study will provide the Commission with an overview of the scientific approaches in support of management measures concerning deep-sea species and ecosystem in the following RFMOs and Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFBs):

  • General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM),
  • North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC),
  • Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO),
  • South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO),
  • South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO),
  • North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC),
  • Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA),
  • Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR),
  • Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC), and
  • Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF).

Duration of the study

This study goes from December 2017 till December 2018

Tasks to be performed

The main task is the scientific domain delineation which must contain for each RFMO & RFB:

  • Data availability (quality and resolution, both temporally and spatially) and data collection provisions.
  • Description of the deep-sea species, habitats and ecosystems.
  • Deep-sea fisheries, deep-sea fish species assessment methodologies and evaluations.
  • Assessment of bottom fishing activities pertaining to the impacts on VMEs.
  • Identification and mapping of sensitive species and habitats.
  • Mitigation measures and criteria to protect deep-sea VMEs.
  • Methods for the long-term monitoring of VME status and functioning.
