Content: This study presents the sediment cartography and metal (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn)and organic compound (polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), DDT, hexachlorobencene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), aldrin, dieldrin, trans-nonachlor) content within 12 estuaries of the Basque Country (northern Spain), sampled between 1998 and 2001. The pollution assessment was carried out taking into account background levels, pollution factors and pollution load indices, but also toxicity values (as effect-range low and medium). This investigation relates potential pollutant sources (both industrial and urban), within each estuary, with their concentrations in the sediment.
