Josu Santiago received his PhD in Biology, specializing in tuna biology and tuna population dynamics. He has been Director of Fisheries of the Basque Government (1999-2009) and chairman of the Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) of ICCAT (2011-2014). Since 2015, Josu is the scientific coordinator of the EU to ICCAT, IATTC and WCPFC. He is also member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF). Since 2015 Josu chairs the IATTC FAD Working Group and since 2018 the inter t-RFMO FAD Working Group.
