Detecting the presence of mandarin in orange juices (detection limit of 1%)
A method for detecting the presence of mandarin in orange juices
AZTI researchers have developed a method for detecting the presence of mandarin in orange juices.
It is based on the detection of a specific DNA fragment in the mandarin by means of a real-time PCR technique. It has been successfully validated in over 50 varieties of mandarins and oranges from all over the world, achieving a detection limit of 1% of mandarin in orange juice.
Fruit juices and nectars are regulated by the Directive 2001/112/EC. This Directive defines the basis of their composition and preparation processes, so as to encourage correct and non-misleading commercial use in their descriptions. One essential requirement is to label clearly if the product is a blend of several types of fruit.
