As part of the celebration of the International Day of Environmental Education, which will take place on 26 January, we are pleased to present an innovative resource for communication in the Basque language in the field of climate change and ecological transition: Klima-aldaketa eta trantsizio ekologikoa Hiztegia (Dictionary of Climate Change and Ecological Transition).

This project has been made possible thanks to the support of Kutxa Fundazioa and the collaboration and commitment of the entities AZTI, BC3, IHOBE, Naturklima and UZEI. Mireia Valle, AZTI researcher and climate change expert, has represented the technology centre in the preparation of this dictionary.

A key resource for a multidisciplinary field

Climate change and ecological transition is a broad, cross-cutting issue that involves concepts from several disciplines. Although more and more concepts are emerging in this field, many of them are not yet included in reference terminology databases and dictionaries.

This dictionary is a first step towards enabling those who work in this field to do so in Basque with precision and confidence, thus promoting a clearer and more rigorous dialogue on a challenge that is so urgent for society.

Aim of the dictionary

The main objective of this dictionary is to collect and unify the specialised vocabulary in Basque needed by actors and institutions working on climate change and ecological transition. The result is a consensus-based resource that consolidates this terminology and promotes its use in Basque.

The dictionary compiles 228 terminological records, each dedicated to a specific concept. These terminological records present the equivalent terms proposed in Basque, as well as the corresponding terms in Spanish, French and English, which also allows the user to carry out searches based on terms in Spanish, French or English. In addition, each terminological record contains a definition of the corresponding concept.

For ease of reference, the terminological records are organised around the following main themes:

  • Reference agreements, texts and institutions

Elaboration criteria

The dictionary has been elaborated in accordance with the quality standards of UZEI, the Basque Centre for Terminology and Lexicography, and in compliance with the rules and recommendations of the Basque language authorities.

The aim of this dictionary is to contribute to the promotion of the use of Basque in the field of climate change and ecological transition, and to guarantee the transmission of Basque in all language domains.
