• Scientific publisher Frontiers introduces FAIR², an innovative AI-powered system designed to enhance research data management, making data more accessible, structured, and reusable.
  • FAIR² not only saves researchers time but also ensures data is machine-ready, accelerating breakthroughs in health, sustainability, and innovation.
  • Frontiers offers researchers the opportunity to try FAIR² at no cost, with limited spots available.

March 3, 2025 – In celebration of Open Data Day 2025, Frontiers has launched FAIR² (FAIR Squared™), an innovative system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize research data management. Developed in collaboration with Senscience, FAIR² aims to enhance the accessibility, organization, and reuse of research data for both humans and machines—driving advancements in global health, sustainability, and scientific innovation.

The challenge: Fragmented data and lost time

Today, a vast amount of scientific data remains underutilized or lost due to a lack of structure and accessibility. Researchers spend significant time on data preparation and organization, limiting their ability to focus on analysis and discovery. At the same time, funding agencies increasingly require that research data be open and reusable, putting additional pressure on scientists to meet these standards.

Too much valuable scientific data is lost before it can drive new discoveries,” says Dr. Sean Hill, co-founder of Senscience, the AI company powering FAIR². “AI-powered data management helps researchers maximize their impact by ensuring their data is ready to fuel the next breakthroughs” he adds.

The Solution: FAIR² – AI-Ready Data Management

FAIR² builds on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), extending them to meet the demands of the AI era.

It’s not enough for data to be open; it must be well-organized, reusable, and impactful” says Dr. Kamila Markram, co-founder and CEO of Frontiers. “FAIR² transforms research data into a tool for discovery, addressing urgent challenges in global health, sustainability, and beyond.

The system leverages AI to structure data, enrich it with context-rich metadata, and ensure compatibility with advanced analysis tools. This allows researchers to easily share their data on open platforms, maximizing its global impact.

A real-world example: Marine biodiversity

The power of FAIR² is already being demonstrated in real-world projects. A research team led by Dr. Ángel Borja from the AZTI Technology Center has used FAIR² to organize nearly three decades of marine biodiversity data collected in the Basque Country for the Basque Water Agency (URA). Their work is featured in the first peer-reviewed FAIR² Data Article, published in Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability.

AI-assisted data stewardship is a game changer,” says Borja. “AI-powered metadata creation makes ocean sustainability research more accessible, providing scientists, policymakers, and decision-makers with fast, accurate insights.”

Additionally, the FAIR² Data Portal offers AI chat, interactive data exploration, and an AI-generated podcast, enabling researchers to engage with their data in innovative ways.

A framework for open and responsible science

Open science must move beyond principles to implementation, structure, and governance,” emphasizes Professor Barend Mons, an expert in research data. “FAIR² provides a framework for AI-ready, context-rich, and responsibly governed data, ensuring informed reuse.”

Invitation to the research community

Frontiers invites researchers to join the FAIR² initiative at no cost, with limited availability. This project offers scientists a chance to transform their datasets into AI-ready resources, increasing their visibility and accelerating discoveries through streamlined AI-assisted data curation.
